Ritenour students know what it takes to make it to the finish line of both a marathon and half marathon.
On April 8, 23 Buder Elementary students completed the last 1.2-mile leg of the Go! St. Louis Read, Right and Run Marathon in Forest Park. The following day, 13 Ritenour High School students completed the Go! Half Marathon in downtown St. Louis. Their dedicated teachers supported them throughout their training and completed the races with them.
The Buder students, supported by teacher Jennifer Carcagno, each read 26 books, “right” the community with 26 good deeds and ran a total of 26.2 miles for the Read, Right, Run Marathon. They trained before school once a week since October to accumulate the first 25 miles needed for the marathon.
Students who completed the marathon were: kindergartners Skylar Schumer and Erin Toohey; second-graders Brayden Aubuchon, Ashlynn Gaffney, Madelyn Jacobsmeyer, Gabriella Jones, Abigail Rohlfing, Kayleigh Schumer, Leia Vaughan, Luke Vaughan and Cade Wienke; third-graders Michaela Helton, Victoria Madrid and Kaizer White; fourth-graders Branden Martin, Ciara Oberkrom, Mya Shaw, David Shen, Addison Swanson, Elyse Wienke and Alex Wilson; fifth-graders Autumn Jacobsmeyer and Grace Schumer.
The Ritenour High School students and their teachers finished the Go! St. Louis Half Marathon on April 10 through the Students on the Go! Program. The group, supported by teachers Louise Haar-Chapman and Rob Weissler, had been training since January for their 13.1-mile race. Training runs were held after school and on Saturday mornings. Throughout the training, students received free running shoes and gear, as well as free race day registration, shirt and finisher’s medal.
Students who competed in this race, along with Weissler, were: Logan Causey, Madison Stiebel, Taylor Robertson, Melissa Castaneda, Alyssa Lane, Emma Stiebel, Amber Brinker, Aurora McCandless, Zabdy Gonzalez, Melanie Uzarraga-Rivera, Jennifer Wakefield, Benjamin Weisz, and Sophie Zgiet.
