Iveland Student Selected for Prestigious National Young Scholars Program
Iveland Elementary second-grader Sophia Ortiz has been selected to attend the National Young Scholars Program in Chicago this summer.
During the six-day program, Sophia will begin planning for her future while learning new leadership and public speaking skills.
“I think it will be very exciting to go there and learn new things and meet new friends,” said Sophia.
According to the program’s website, “the National Young Scholars Program is a fantastic opportunity for curious and high-aspiring young students to make like-minded new friends and enjoy unforgettable adventures while harnessing their creativity and critical thinking to help build the future that they aspire to live in.”
Maggie Wasilewski, Sophia’s second grade teacher, said she knows Sophia will grow from this summer's opportunity.
“I see a lot of potential in her both academically and in her leadership abilities,” Waskilewski said about Sophia. “She is always taking the initiative to help those around her. She also embodies the growth mindset like no other student I know.”
