Ritenour Schools Collects 12,407 Food Items for Families in Need
Ritenour students and staff members are making the holiday season happier for families in need throughout the district after collecting about 12,407 nonperishable food items and turkeys.
On Nov. 25, 2019 members of the police and public works departments from municipalities throughout the Ritenour School District packed their trucks and flatbeds with hundreds of boxes of food from Ritenour schools and brought them to the Ritenour Co-Care food pantry.
Ritenour schools, along with the Ritenour Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Center collected nonperishable food throughout November for families who are served by Ritenour Co-Care and the Joint Police Chiefs Christmas Basket Program, which is organized by police chiefs from every municipality in the district. Police chiefs will use food from this collection to make holiday baskets and deliver them to up to 100 Ritenour families in December.
Ritenour Middle School (RMS) continued its tradition of being the top Ritenour school for the annual food drive. This year, RMS students and staff collected 3,707 items. Each of the other eight Ritenour schools and adult education center also did an outstanding job with donations:
- Adult Education and Literacy Center, 30 items
- Buder Elementary, 378 items
- Iveland Elementary’s, 1,123 items
- Kratz Elementary, 939 items
- Marion Elementary, 421 items
- Marvin Elementary, 1,945 items
- Wyland Elementary, 1,455 items
- Hoech Middle School, 2,284 items
- Ritenour High School collected approximately 125 items for Ritenour Co-Care and about another 125 items for RHS counselors to share with students in need during the school day. In lieu of counting individual items, the school assigns points for each item, with 2 points for any protein item, two points for family-sized items and one point each for all other non-perishable items. This year, the high school collected items that totaled just over 700 points. Students donated $30 in spare change during lunch periods during the collection period that allowed leaders to purchase more food for the drive.
