New Safety and Security Protocols to Begin Second Semester at Ritenour High School

Dear Ritenour High School Community,

The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and Ritenour High School (RHS) is planning to take several additional steps to ensure our school has a safe learning environment beginning in the second semester on Jan. 17, 2023.

These new safety protocols include:

  • Requiring all students to wear their student ID’s each day
  • Changes/updates to procedures for building entry during school arrival
  • Encouraging students to use lockers to store personal belongings
  • Requiring clear or mesh backpacks for all students (the backpacks will be provided at no cost to students who need them)
  • Conducting safety screenings with metal detecting wands during school arrival and at some school events
  • Ski masks and gator face masks will no longer be allowed in the building. Only medical grade/style paper face masks are acceptable

Our new safety plan will be implemented in a phased approach during the second semester.  Not all of these new steps will take place at the same time.  We are taking a multi-layered approach to align with school safety best practices.

We will communicate these new expectations with students during their Husky Time beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17 and as we continue to roll out new safety protocols over the next several weeks. Our first steps in implementing our plan begin on Jan. 17 with requiring students to wear their IDs at all times when on school buses and on campus.

These new safety protocols stem from recommendations made by our students and align with best practices for schools. We also received input from the district’s safety team, RHS administrators, staff, and on recent surveys from parents and our community.

Please reach out if you have any questions.  Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jana Haywood
Ritenour High School Principal
