RHS Jazz Band Continues Cultural Exchange during Seventh Visit to Germany
Students in the Ritenour High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Hadley Haux, continued their cultural exchange with the Dingolfinger Stadtmusikanten in Bavaria this summer with a two-week visit to Germany from June 4-18.
This was the Jazz Band's seventh visit in since the exchange began in 1999. Students, chaperoned by several staff, parents and band alumni, were hosted by families of band members of the musikschule (music school) and immersed in Bavarian culture. Herr Georg Schwimmbec, director of the music school, was the group’s lead host.
RHS students who participated on the trip were: Davis Volpitto, Geraldine Flores, Charlayne Challans, Brandon Fain, Marco Urbina, Madison Moyle, Howard Slaven, Alissa Smith, Hannah Grimes, Anna Wilson, Caleb Madison, Cordan Hampton and Christina Doherty.
While on their trip, RHS Jazz Band students experienced German and English classes at the Fahrschule, an educational institution similar to what is offered as a U.S. middle school. They also performed in concert for Bavarian students on their final day of school for the session. Other concerts included a joint performance with the host band for a Pfingsten (Pentecost) observance, another at the Stadthalle and at other nearby venues.
In addition to the music cultural events, the Jazz Band received tours of one of the largest BMW auto production plants in the world in Dingolfing, and of the Miraphone factory in Waldkraiburg to see how brass instruments are made. Other historical and cultural sites RHS students visited included the cities of Munich, Regensberg, Landshut, the King Ludwig II palace at Herrenchiemsee, Liberation Hall at Kelheim and a falcon/eagle show at Falkenhof/Castle Rosenberg.
“This exchange program has been tremendously valuable to RHS Jazz students and our Bavarian counterparts over the years,” said Hadley Haux, Jazz Band director. “It's been an opportunity to share the universal language of music, learn about each other’s culture, and form life-long memories and friendships.”
The Dingolfinger Stadtmusikanten will make their sixth reciprocal visit to St. Louis in 2020 and will be hosted by the RHS Jazz Band.
