Ritenour High School’s Student Newspaper Earns International Honors

Ritenour High School’s student newspaper, the Pepper Box, received the International Second Place Award from the International Quill and Scroll Society, a student journalism honor society.

This year’s award recognizes the outstanding Pepper Box news content from the 2018-2019 school year. The recognition is a higher rating than what the paper received for the 2017-2018 school year.

Ron Steinschriber, an RHS journalism teacher and Pepper Box sponsor, said he is proud of the student journalists who worked hard at developing high quality hard news, features and editorials that were complimented by excellent photos and graphics to tell their stories.

“I was happy to see that the improvements we made based on past critiques were represented in the new rating this year,” said Steinschriber. “Last year's senior group was truly invested in seeing our newspaper grow and I thought it was pretty obvious with the work we produced last year.”

Members of the award-winning 2018-2019 staff were: Trysten Bell (Spotlight Editor), Coralis Bobe (Visual Editor-in Chief), Faith Boyd, Pierre Brown, Makari Buress, Jersie Cox, Faith Curd, Catalina Mundin (Business Editor), Caroline Ramos-Herrera (Sports Editor), Dorothy Sloan-Ule (Opinion Editor), Victoria Taylor (Production Editor-in Chief), Martin Trujillo Carrazco (Content Editor-in Chief) and Madison Waldrup (Online Editor), Other staffers included: Jada Baylor, Mackenzie Davis, Morgan Eaves, Alberto Linares, Chloe Pagan, Daniela Saenz, Abigail Richardson, Andrea Rojo, Quynh Trinh and Caroline Wong.

This year’s staff, led by Mundin as production editor-in-chief, said the feedback from the judges will guide the newspaper staff make additional changes that will strengthen the paper as a source of news for high school students.

“I think it was a very fair rating this year,” said Mundin. “It was giving us real feedback that we can work with.”

The Quill and Scroll judges noted in their review of the Pepper Box:

“The Pepper Box serves the students, faculty and community of Ritenour High School well. The staff carefully reports and writes news, features, editorials and shorter blurbs alike. The visuals help strengthen the publication’s solid storytelling and create a visually engaging and just downright pretty page. The coverage provided by The Pepper Box has grown to tackle national and local community news, and I believe more can be done by digging deeper into these wells of news and information.”
