Ritenour Middle School Teacher Honored with Emerson Award

Dr. Matt MackoDr. Matthew Macko, an English language arts teacher at Ritenour Middle School, is the 2021 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award recipient.

The Emerson Award recognizes St. Louis-area teachers of students in kindergarten through college level for their vital role in shaping their students’ lives. Dr. Macko was selected by Ritenour administrators for his outstanding contributions to the teaching profession and for his role in inspiring Ritenour students.

“Dr. Macko is always supporting continuous improvement at RMS and for the district,” said RMS Principal Dr. Brian Rich. “At the classroom level, he is masterful at building positive relationships with students and helping them connect to school with engaging lessons that emphasize reading and writing. He is a great role model of how being a lifelong learner can make a positive difference for the individual and community at large.” 

Dr. Macko, who has taught in Ritenour since 2014, is part of the eighth-grade Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Ritenour Middle, and has served on the curriculum revision team, the Superintendent’s Communication Forum, the Calendar Committee, the School Improvement Team, the Quality Curriculum Council,  Summer School Leadership, and the RMS “ICU” Leadership Team to support students who need additional academic help.

Due to the pandemic, there was no in-person reception or awards ceremony. Each recipient will be mailed the award this year. As an Emerson award recipient, Dr. Macko will be eligible to apply for grants provided by Emerson to support the curriculum and instruction for his students.
