Terry Crews Visits Buder and Marion Elementary Schools
Actor-author-athlete Terry Crews visited two elementary schools in the Ritenour School District on Nov. 11, 2022, to introduce his debut middle grade graphic novel, Terry’s Crew. The Noble Neighbor coordinated the event. Crews entertained Buder and Marion Elementary fourth- and fifth-grade students with stories about his childhood and lessons about following your dreams and always choosing to lift up those around you rather than tear them down. Autographed copies of Terry’s Crew were later handed out to all students in attendance. His energy was contagious in the room of eager young fans.
“I’m so pumped to be here - I’m even more excited than the kids!” Crews told Buder Elementary Principal, Dr. LaKisha Franks, before students entered the gymnasium for his presentation.
Crews told students about his early love for art, music and football. He said at various points in his life, he wanted to be a professional flautist, a football player, a furniture designer, an artist and an actor. His desire for an acting career came after seeing Star Wars for the first time. He told students to dream big and never limit themselves to just one dream.
“You can do anything you want to do if you’re willing to pay the price, if you’re willing to do the work,” Crews said. “If you have one person who believes in you, it can change your life.”
Crews spoke about teachers and coaches who influenced and encouraged him to follow his passions. During a question and answer session, students audibly gasped to learn that it took Crews four years from start to finish to publish his latest graphic novel, showing them the importance of persistence. When asked why he chose to start writing, he answered that he loves having the ability to transport his readers out of their surroundings and into a whole different place. He writes about his own personal experiences.
“The students and staff were so excited to have Mr. Crews visit Buder Elementary,” said Dr. Franks. “Our students represented Buder well today, and we are so thrilled we have this memory to hold onto for years to come.”
