New York Times bestselling children’s author Tami Charles treated Wyland Elementary K-2 students to a special read-aloud of one of her new books on Jan. 12, 2023. She shared “We Are Here,” an engaging multicultural book that celebrates the heritage of children of color. The author also spoke about her nationally beloved picture book, “All Because You Matter.” 

As a former teacher, Charles led an interactive and inspiring presentation with Wyland students about how she became an author and about honoring their own roots.

“Her visit was perfect timing right before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday because our students had been working on projects that focused on Dr. King,” said Principal Dr. Lisa Greenstein. “She talked about the legacy of Dr. King and his impact on children of color. She reminded us all that we should be proud of our heritage.”  

Each Wyland student in grades K-2 received a free signed copy of “We Are Here,” and several of her books were donated to the school library. The visit with Charles and book giveaway was made possible thanks to a donation from The Noble Neighbor, a nonprofit whose mission is to bring books and authors to St. Louis area schools to empower kids and promote equity in education.

Earlier this school year, The Noble Neighbor made it possible for actor-author-athlete Terry Crews to visit both Marion and Buder elementary schools and share his book, Terry’s Crew, with students. Marion Elementary students also enjoyed a visit by nationally-acclaimed author Renée Watson in October thanks to the generosity of this bookstore.
